Unique attributes of site:

The UOGML is uniquely situated near a variety of coral reef habitats that are easily accessible by land and by small boats. Although some reefs on Guam have been impacted by anthropogenic disturbances such as runoff, sedimentation, and sewage, the reefs on the windward (eastern) and northern coasts of Guam are relatively pristine. These contrasts in reef vitality allow for the study of anthropogenic effects on coral reefs, an area of considerable current interest. Guam's coastal waters contain over 220 species of benthic marine algae, over 250 species of scleractinian corals, over 1500 species of molluscs, and 880 species of coral reef fishes. Our reference collections contain much of the marine flora and fauna, and have been continually maintained and updated
